The result is a series of hotel rooms and suites with unique elements that give each room its own ‘wow factor.’ Each of the recently unveiled new rooms and suites, plus the state-of-the-art “Shimmer Spa,” not only has oodles of style and comfort that rival many of the world’s boutique hotels, but also a real sense of design adventure and fun.

“It is not just a place to stay while you enjoy the beautiful Catskills, but a full-blown entertainment experience of its own,” says Henderson. He and Massa, in fact, come to the hotel business by way of theater, as actors and producers. “We spent years writing, directing, designing, and producing shows together and Joseph always built dramatic and sometimes fantastical stage settings: his knowledge and instincts were critical in bringing the rooms’ décor and original design elements together. He is able to almost read my mind when I explain a new design concept or piece of craftsmanship that I feel a room needs. There’s nothing typical about The Roxbury: each room exudes its own carefully crafted ambience; we strived to make every single suite a groovy place to stay!”

Here’s what they mean.

Genie’s Bottle is a spacious two-bedroom suite constructed with the signature arabesque curves of Persian architecture and art and decorated with custom-made cheetah-print sofas, rich silk damask-patterned settees, and “Victoria’s Ghost” Phillipe Starck chairs. The “crown jewel” of the suite (and the whole expansion) is a perfectly spherical purple and gold luxurious bottle-shaped bathroom with a 70-gallon Japanese soaking tub at its center. The “genie’s bottle” is not simply curved marble walls, but a perfectly engineered sphere, a childhood fantasy now come to life in grownup fashion as a cozy, pillow-strewn djinn’s den.

The adjoining suite, George’s Space Pad, is furnished with bright space-age orange, Lucite, and chrome chairs and a cherry red chromatherapy bathtub and sink that actually illuminate from within. Specially manufactured in Italy, the Space Pad tub and sink illustrate how an entire room can be built around a “riff” on one key design element. Fred’s Lair has an 11′ tall pebblestone shower and bathroom area, bed throws made of seven different kinds of faux fur and mirrors made of driftwood collected from the beach on the Cornish coast of England. Co-owner Joseph Massa painstakingly sculpted the rocky interior of this room for more than two months.

The Mod Pod is the epitome of 1960/70s groove with its artichoke-shaped chandeliers, flower-power artwork, and swirling yellow, green and orange wallpaper reminiscent of Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In.” Golightly-A-Go-Go, with its black velvet and crunched silver foil wallcoverings, Tiffany-blue accent walls, crystal chandeliers, and rich cherry wood molding, is an elegant tribute to the iconic Truman Capote character and Audrey Hepburn’s classic performance.

The Partridge Nest, with its bright blue, yellow and red 3D wallscape and pop-art glass mosaic tilework, is a reincarnation of the famous Mondrian-inspired bus. Samantha’s Cloud is light and airy, with sparkling silver glitter-glass mosaic tile and a cloud mural that spans the entire ceiling and most of the walls, created by mural artist, Chris Kanienberg

“In designing the rooms, our goal was not only to make the guest’s primary response a smile of delight – or maybe even a jaw drop or two – but also to create an environment of pampering comfort. They are meant to exude what we call “whimsical elegance,” Massa emphasizes. “It’s been over a year in the works and it is finally done and ready for guests. Many of these one-of-a-kind elements were created or discovered by our staff. Our manager, Leslie Black, crafted her own custom designed lampshades, drapes and throw pillows and combed the Internet with the tenacity of her Scotties for the perfect accessories. Joseph not only supervised the construction process, he was also a man of all trades. The Mondrian masterpiece in the Partridge Nest took him three months of excruciating patience and a small fortune in masking tape,” says Gregory.

Amenities Abound in These Super Cool Rooms…All rooms and suites include wireless Internet, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine, A/C, 100% Egyptian cotton linens, telephones with voicemail, luxury ‘Lather’ bathroom amenities, locally hand-made body soaps, state-of-the-art flat screen TVs with DVD players and access to a DVD collection of over 400 DVD’s, mood lighting on dimmers, fresh flowers, Godiva chocolates, double-pillow top mattresses, one-of-a kind chandeliers, and an extensive continental breakfast served every morning along with snacks throughout the day.

The 4′ x 6′ creation is comprised of 3,000 12-inch glowing plexiglass “rods” that had to be individually heated to 310 degrees in order to make them pliable enough to tie into knots all over the chandelier’s frame.

The Upstairs Downstairs suite takes up the entire upstairs level of the main house, with two separate bedrooms and a sitting room. The emphasis on cooler climates coincides with more rigorous clonal selection, eliminating those clones suited for sparkling wine, which have even thinner skins. These days there is also a greater understanding of and appreciation for different styles of Pinot Noir wine, even if there is less agreement about those styles-should it be rich, concentrated and loaded with flavor, or a wine of elegance, finesse and delicacy? Or can it, in classic Pinot Noir sense, be both? Even varietal character remains subject to debate. Pinot Noir can certainly be tannic, especially when it is fermented with some of its stems, a practice that many vintners around the world believe contributes to the wine’s backbone and longevity. Pinot Noir can also be long-lived, but predicting with any precision which wines or vintages will age is often the ultimate challenge in forecasting.

Pinot Noir is the classic grape of Burgundy and also of Champagne, where it is pressed immediately after picking in order to yield white juice. It is just about the only red grown in Alsace. In California, it excelled in the late 1980s and early 1990s and seems poised for further progress.
